TEACHING PRACTICES ON CAMPUS: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OF THE HERBAL MEDICINE INDUSTRY & UTILIZATION OF NATURAL MATERIALS FOR MEDICINE

The activities of teaching practitioners on campus are carried out with the aim of providing an overview and insight to chemistry study program students about the application of chemistry in the world of work. In this teaching practitioner activity on campus, two resource persons were present, namely: (1) Mr. Victor S. Ringoringo, S.E., M.Sc. from PT. Scan Pacific tbk and Mrs. Emi Rusmalawati, S.Si. from the Nuclear Energy Supervisory Agency.

In his presentation, Mr. Victor S. Ringoringo conveyed the Opportunities and Challenges of the Herbal Medicine Industry in Indonesia Towards National Drug Independence. This course is mandatory for students taking Natural Materials Chemistry courses. Mr. Victor said that the products permitted by BPOM must meet 3 requirements, namely: (1) quality, (2) efficacy, and (3) safety. In this case, the herbal medicine industry must register its products and fulfill the 3 requirements to get permission from BPOM. Regarding the herbal medicine production process, Mr. Victor said that the process really depends on the harvest process and the quality of the medicinal raw materials. If the raw material is not of good quality, it cannot be used to make quality herbal medicine. The potential of the herbal medicine market is relatively high with fast market growth, several entrepreneurs have used digital marketing to increase their selling value. Therefore, strategic innovation and collaboration are needed to be able to maintain herbal medicinal products on the market.

On the other hand, Mrs. Emi conveyed about the use of natural ingredients for medicine. This lecture activity was also attended by students taking Food Chemistry courses. Mrs. Emi said that there are four models of medicine as therapy that can be produced from natural ingredients, namely: (1) natural drug therapy, (2) alternative therapy, (3) complementary therapy, and (4) conventional therapy. by the community is a complementary type of therapy because in this case natural medicine is used to support the results of conventional therapy.
