Producing Souvenirs from Inorganic Waste initiated by Matching Funds Programme

Taman Kyai Langgeng (TKL) Ecopark met its match, Yogyakarta State University (UNY) in realising TKL Ecopark as an educational and recreational park based on local potential. The result of this matching fund collaboration between the education and business worlds gave birth to the ‘TKL Laboratory Recreation’ programme which provides opportunities for local residents to learn about the use of materials in the surrounding environment. Team Leader from UNY Prof Dr Isana Yosephine L said, this activity is in the form of theoretical and practical training to make products of economic value. It can be from the processing of organic waste, inorganic waste, or utilising natural materials, such as spices. For example, organic waste is used to make eco enzyme and classic enzyme. Inorganic waste can be made into various handicrafts for souvenirs. Then utilise natural materials around the environment to make soap, ecoprint, and traditional herbs.

There is also training on creating healthy culinary menu, especially for traders in the TKL area to train them to make healthy, quality and tasty menu variations,’ he told Jawa Pos Radar Magelang on Saturday (10/6). The training will last until September. It will be held every Saturday at Kepodang Building in TKL Ecopark. Participants who take part in this training will also rotate. So that the opportunities for the community are evenly distributed. ‘We want to improve the skills of the community,’ he hoped. According to him, there are many potentials that can be managed in recreational areas. Especially about waste. If the waste in recreational areas is well managed, he believes it will have a good impact on the environment.

Dr Kun Sri Budiasih added that this activity is also expected to improve the quality of people's views. That tourism is not only to add a sense of happiness, but also has educational value. ‘Tourism can be learning at the same time, after the tour, we can add knowledge and skills,’ she added.

Director of TKL Ecopark Arif Taat Ujiyanto said that this activity was very useful for the development of eduparks in their tourist attractions. Because the direction of this activity is to add to the TKL Ecopark tour package. Later visitors can experience making several products as one of the activities that visitors can do at TKL Ecopark.
