The Results of Research on Potato Nanocellulose and Turmeric Extract Leads Chemistry and Biology Students to Third Place in the 2025 UNYSEF National Poster Competition

Siti Nurjanah (Team Leader/Chemistry Study Program) and two other members, Bayu Ramadan (Chemistry Study Program) and Dani Baskara Yulian Ashar (Biology Study Program), won third place in the national-level scientific poster competition, the UNY Scientific Fair 14 (UNYSEF 14) 2025, organized by the Student Activity Unit (UKM). This activity is an annual event of the UNY Research UKM as part of a series of events commemorating UNY's 61st Anniversary. The scientific poster competition is held with various stages, including preliminary rounds and grand finalist presentations. Siti Nurjanah and her team, supervised by Ms. Nur Aeni Ariyati, S.P., M.P., Ph.D. (Department of Biology Education), successfully outperformed participants from various universities and secured third place in the poster presentation held on May 17-18, 2025, at the GPLA Building, FIKK-UNY.
The team's topic was the creation of a skin moisturizing formula using innovative potato nanocellulose and ginger extract. The team studied the activity of the moisturizing formula through in vitro and in vivo tests. The results showed that the formula can increase human skin moisture by hydrating the epidermis. Furthermore, the formula was declared safe and did not cause skin irritation. In his presentation, Dani Baskara explained the benefits of this moisturizer, namely reducing the potential for acne due to excessive dryness. Bayu Ramadan added that hydrated or moisturized skin prevents premature aging.
However, the jury's assessment indicated that further human activity testing is necessary. This concerns the safety of the formula before its actual application to human skin. This championship achievement adds to the long list of achievements made by students from the Chemistry Study Program at UNY. Dr. Retno Arianingrum, Head of the Department of Chemistry Education and Coordinator of the Chemistry Study Program, expressed her appreciation for the achievements of the Chemistry Study Program and the Chemistry Study Program students. "I congratulate the team on this impressive achievement. I sincerely hope this achievement will motivate other students to work and compete in the fields of research and innovation."
