Inauguration of a Professor Drs. Jaslin Ikhsan, M.App.Sc., Ph.D.

Inauguration of Prof. Jaslin Ikhsan, M.App.Sc., Ph.D. at the UNY Auditorium Saturday (21/11). With the inauguration of Prof. Jaslin, making the Chemistry Study Program of FMIPA UNY have 11 professors. Prof. Jaslin Ikhsan, M.App., Sc., Ph.D. confirmed as a professor in the field of Chemistry. He delivered a scientific speech entitled 'Model of Complexation and Surface Modification of Clay Minerals as a New Material and Its Benefits',

Prof. Jaslin said that clay minerals in particular have an important role because they have a relatively high surface area. For example, montmorillonite, which he used several times as a research sample, has a specific surface area of 83.9 square meters per gram which means that 1.1 grams or about 1/4 teaspoon of clay mineral samples from the soil have the same surface area of 100 square meters. to the surface area of the football. As for clay minerals have several benefits in the practice of community life, including: (1) purification in Islamic law because dust has a very high surface area which can bind a large number of chemical compounds including compounds that are unclean sources; (2) reduce the bitter taste in vegetables by adding clay to the vegetable stew; (3) as a beauty scrub because it can attract dead skin and give freshness to the skin; (4) handling industrial wastewater; (5) consuming clay to attract toxic compounds in the stomach and maintain a healthy body; (6) filtering organic and inorganic compounds that endanger consumers so that the construction of the well must be at least 10 meters from the septic tank; and (7) attracting odor-causing gas molecules such as those produced by carcasses.

In particular, the processes that occur on the surface of clay minerals are very interesting study materials so that we can understand, control, and optimize the function of clay minerals for the welfare of life. Therefore, we as Indonesians should be grateful because the high clay mineral content in Indonesia also makes Indonesian soil very fertile.
