TRAINING OF MAKING NATURAL SCRUB SOAP FROM COFFEE DREGS

On Sunday, October 3, 2021, the service team from the Department of Chemistry Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UNY, carried out community service which was the product of research results chaired by Prof. Dr. Sri Handayani, M.Sc. in Kamal Wetan-Mangsel Hamlet, Margomulyo, Seyegan, Sleman. The service team carried out training activities for making natural scrub soap from coffee grounds to increase the interest of community entrepreneurs during the spread of COVID-19. Activities carried out offline are limited to strict health protocols.

Participants practice making soap directly, followed by questions and answers and filling out a questionnaire. Some important points from the procedure for making natural scrub soap from coffee grounds are as follows.

  1. Almost all natural oils / fats can be made into soap, participants can search for easy ones such as: Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Olive Oil, Corn Oil, Soybean Oil.
  2. It takes 50 NaOH to convert oil/fat into soap.
  3. Water/aquadest/aqua 133g is also needed as a solvent. Choose distilled water or bottled water because the water from the pump is not good, it contains a lot of minerals.
  4. Essential and Fragrance Oils - as fragrance.
  5. Dye to color the soap to make it more attractive.
  6. Coffee grounds as an additive because the soap we want to make is scrub soap.
  7. With regard to making this alkaline solution (water + NaOH), there are several things that must be considered, including: (a) Wear long sleeves, protective eyewear, masks and rubber gloves; (b) The precautionary principle is necessary because this liquid can cause blindness if it comes into contact with the eyes, or cause a burning sensation if it comes into contact with the skin. Also provide vinegar liquid, this is to anticipate if the skin is exposed to alkaline liquid; (c) Do it in an open space, for example in a park or in a place that has free air. Do not breathe air escaping from this solution; (d) Always put NaOH into the water (slowly) and not vice versa. (e) Keep out of reach of children / do not involve children at all in this process.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had many impacts on various sectors of life, one of which is the economic sector. Through this training activity on making natural scrub soap from coffee grounds, it is hoped that it can motivate all mothers to cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit and start entrepreneurship from home safely.
