Chemistry students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) visited PT Madubaru Madukismo to learn about the sugar and spirits processing.

On December 15, 2025, students from the Chemistry Study Program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) undertook an industrial visit to PT Madubaru Pabrik Gula – Pabrik Spiritus Madukismo in Yogyakarta. The primary objective of this visit was to deepen the students' understanding of the practical applications of chemistry in the industrial sector, particularly within the sugar and spirits processing industries.
Accompanied by their supervising lecturer, Yoga Priastomo, M.Eng., the students gained first-hand insights into the production process, which included the processing of raw sugarcane, the refining of sugar, and the utilization of by-products in spirits production. During the visit, they received comprehensive explanations regarding the various stages of the industrial process, product quality control protocols, and the implementation of occupational safety and environmental standards.
Furthermore, the students toured the production facilities and testing laboratories, where they learned how the quality of sugar and spirits is maintained to meet established standards. “This industrial visit enables students to better understand the connection between the chemistry concepts learned in the classroom and their practical applications in the industry. We hope they gain a valuable insight into the workplace and the challenges inherent in the chemical industry,” remarked Yoga Priastomo, M.Eng.
The students enthusiastically embraced this activity, as it provided a meaningful and applicable learning experience. Beyond enhancing their knowledge, the visit also illuminated potential career development opportunities within the food processing and applied chemical industries. Through this endeavour, the Chemistry Study Program at FMIPA, UNY, remains dedicated to enriching experiential learning and bridging the gap between academia and industry.
