Technical Training on Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectra (GC-MS) Instrument

The Department of Chemistry Education, FMIPA-UNY held technical training activities on the use of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectra (GC-MS) instruments for lecturers in the Chemistry Study Program. This activity was done at the Instrumentation Laboratory, Department of Chemistry Education, FMIPA-UNY from 28 to 29 August 2024. It was carried out in order to introduce the use of the new GC-MS instrument for lecturers who are particularly pursuing research fields using these instruments. Since August 2024, the Department of Chemistry Education has obtained a new research instrument, namely GC-MS. The presence of this GC-MS instrument brings fresh air to lecturers in the chemistry study program to be able to accelerate their research so that it can be immediately distributed to the public.

Gunawan T., a GC-MS technician, explained the various components in GC-MS and how to operate the instrument. Dr Retno Arianingrum stated that the existence of this GC-MS as a research support instrument within the Department of Chemistry Education is able to motivate lecturers to be more passionate in conducting research.  In addition, the existence of this GC-MS will accelerate student final project research so that the Department of Chemistry Education can score graduates on time. This instrument is not only prioritised for internal research activities within the Department of Chemistry Education, FMIPA-UNY, but will also open doors for researchers outside the department and other universities to access the facility. This indirectly supports the acceleration of research in the field of chemistry in Indonesia. ‘It is possible that the presence of GC-MS can open opportunities for the academic community in the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA-UNY to increase research collaboration with national and foreign institutions’ (Retno Arianingrum).
